Latest Updates and New Shootouts
Evan Powell — May 24, 2012
If you’re looking for the best camera under $200, look no further. We’ve just posted Best Cameras under $200, a shootout between four popular models from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony. In addition:
--The Fujifilm HS30 and Nikon P510 have been added to the Superzoom shootout
--The Canon D20 has been added to the Waterproof shootout
--The Nikon D3200 has been added to Entry-level DSLRs.
MORE CAMERA NEWS
IN THE WORKS.......
MID-RANGE DSLRS
Including the Canon T3i, the Nikon D5100, and the all new Nikon D3200, a 24 MP machine for under $700, this shootout is underway. We’re shooting to have this done by the end of next week.
BEST CAMERA UNDER $300
We just examined the market under $200. Now we’re putting the Canon ELPH 520 up against the Sony H90, the Nikon S8200, the Panasonic ZS15, and the Olympus E-PL1 to see which one emerges as the best camera under $300.
COMPACT SUPERZOOM CAMERA UPDATE
This week saw first production shipments of the Olympus SZ-31MR, a compact superzoom camera that sports a whopping 24x zoom lens, which surpasses the 20x zoom range of the other 2012 cameras in this niche. Will it replace the Panasonic ZS20 as the best compact superzoom on the market? Our sample has arrived, and we’ll be updating this shootout in three weeks, once we’ve road-tested the ZS-31MR against its competition.
NEW PREMIUM DSLRs: NIKON vs. CANON
Nikon made a strong move against Canon with the release of the D800 (36 MP, $3,000 body only). Canon responded by releasing the EOS 5D Mark III (22 MP, $3,700 body only). Odd thing is, until now Canon has been pushing megapixels while Nikon has been claiming megapixels are not relevant to picture quality at this resolution. The tables are now turned. Our head-to-head shootout between these two DSLR titans is scheduled for June.

I am eager to know when your compact superzoom shootout will include the Olympus SZ-31MR. I am heading to the jungles of Borneo at the end of June, and wonder if this is the right camera to bring along.
