New Compact Superzoom Shootout
Evan Powell — May 12, 2012
Who doesn't want 20x zoom power in a pocket sized camera? If you're among those that do, check out the new shootout of the Best Compact Superzoom Cameras 2012, a seven-way battle between Canon, Nikon, FujiFilm, Panasonic, Pentax, and two entries from Sony.
MORE CAMERA NEWS
NEW WATERPROOF CAMERAS
When we completed the testing of the rugged waterproofs two months ago, the Panasonic TS3 came in at the top of the heap. But Panasonic is now shipping the new TS4, and the shootout has been updated with this model. Canon is re-entering the niche with the Powershot D20, which just arrived, and the Best Waterpoof shootout will be updated this week to see how it fares against the TS4.
IN THE WORKS.......
NEW SUPERZOOM/BRIDGE CAMERAS
Our recent Superzoom shootout found the Panasonic DMC-FZ150 to be the best camera among all superzooms under $500. But the Nikon P510 (42x zoom) and the Fujifilm HS30EXR (30x zoom) have hit the market. This Superzoom shootout will be updated by May 25 to include these two latest models.
BEST CAMERAS FOR UNDER $200
If you're on a budget and want the best pocket camera you can buy for under $200, stay tuned. Four of the hottest new models are under test, and this shootout is coming soon.
MID-RANGE DSLRS
Including the Canon T3i, the Nikon D5100, and the all new Nikon D3200, a 24 MP machine for under $700, this shootout is in process. Look for it by the end of the month.
NEW PREMIUM DSLRs: NIKON vs. CANON
Nikon made a magnificent competitive move against Canon with the release of the D800 (36 MP, $3,000 body only). Canon responded by releasing the EOS 5D Mark III (22 MP, $3,700 body only). Odd thing is, until now Canon has been pushing megapixels while Nikon has been claiming megapixels are not relevant to picture quality at this resolution. The tables are now turned. Our head-to-head shootout between these two DSLR titans is scheduled for June.

Hey. I am totally hooked on buying the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20. You guys totally hooked me when I read your 2012 showdown and other articles that I totally can't remember at this moment. So I rushed onto Amazon and totally wanted the Silver and I totally bought all the other stuff that I didn't know if I need it. Anyway. Afterwards, I got an email from the seller (won't mention the name unless you want me to) and he said that this camera is discontinued and they attempted to get one from "every possible source we have available but were unsuccessful." so, I've been looking around to find any new reviews to say why the ZS20 has been cancelled and whether I need to find another super perfecto camera. I need to buy the right thing now, before my daughter leaves elementary school and before my son decides to quit junior high and moves to Bali to raise organically Kosher duck tongues. so, Should I Stay or Should I Go? -- Evie.
