Olympus E-PL2

At $399, the E-PL1's younger sibling has features that make it easier and more intuitive to use, but produces the same quality images. A larger rear screen and faster autofocus make the E-PL2 more enjoyable to use, but the incremental cost doesn't improve image quality, which is already exceptional at this price. Our evaluation looks at the E-PL2 in comparison to the PL1, since relatively little has changed.

The Olympus PEN E-PL2

The Good

Comfortable to use. The E-PL1 is larger and more cumbersome that more recent mirrorless models. The E-PL2 is smaller, more compact, and has a convenient thumb ridge along the back panel that makes it much easier to hold comfortably, even one-handed. The smoother edges don't dig into the hand the same way that the body of the E-PL1 did either. The E-PL2 retains the pop-up flash from the E-PL1, which tucks neatly out of the way when not in use.

The E-PL2 sticks to a layout that's somewhat traditional. The main control knob on the top panel selects the camera's various image modes. In addition to the standard Manual/Aperture/Shutter/Program, there's Intelligent Auto, a mode that, like program, selects everything for you--except it allows some user input into how you'd like the scene to be shot. For users who are new to "serious" cameras, it is a good in-between step when making the jump from Program to something that allows more manual control. The button placement on the E-PL2 is more logical than it was on the E-PL1, especially the recessed power button that resists being hit accidentally. . The jog wheel is placed slightly too low, and requires taking most of your hand off of the camera in order to actuate it, but after some use it becomes second nature.

Faster autofocus. Compared to the E-PL1, the E-PL2 feels like it locks focus a bit faster, which can be very helpful when you're aiming at a subject that won't stand still. It's still not as fast as some newer mirrorless cameras (Nikon V1, I'm looking at you) and can't hold a candle to a DSLR, but it's an upgrade over its predecessor, and that's worth something.

All the strong points of the E-PL1. The E-PL2 retains the E-PL1's large sensor, in-body image stabilization, great lens selection, and extensive adjustability. All of these factors, discussed in more detail on the previous page, make the E-PL2 a great choice for someone looking to exercise a little more control over their

The Bad

Extra cost, limited benefit. For an extra $100, the E-PL2 is essentially an E-PL1 plus a faster autofocus motor in a re-designed case.

PhotoScope: Olympus E-PL1 vs Olympus E-PL2

In fact, example photos of the E-PL1 and E-PL2 show just how similar they are. There's no appreciable difference in image quality.

Movies. Video performance is the exact same as the E-PL1. Really, Olympus? You had an entire year to update the weak video capabilities of the E-PL1, and instead you stuck the same mess into the E-PL2 and called it good. The lack of an upgrade is a disappointment.

Same non-articulating screen. A non-articulating screen makes the E-PL2 harder to use in direct sunlight. The accessory viewfinder, while effective, is also expensive. When you're trying to purchase a budget camera, "spend more money" isn't a very good solution to a problem like this. Accessory viewfinders cost either $180 (for the VF-3) or $220 (for the higher-resolution VF-2) and add bulk to the camera itself. They also preclude the use of an external shoe-mounted flash.

The Verdict

The Olympus E-PL2 is a slimmer, easier to use version of the E-PL1, and the price reflects that. Those serious about their photography, or those who value added convenience and have an extra hundred bucks in their pocket, will appreciate the upgrade. People looking for the absolute best bang-for-buck, however, will want to stick with the E-PL1.
